The extensive damage inflicted by Hurricane Maria forced a two and a half year closure of the Arecibo Job Corps Center (AJCC). The AJCC Director and a small number of staff members worked with the Department of Labor (DOL) Contractors to take on the challenging task of cleaning and preparing the Center for reopening.
The DOL estimated that the facility would be able to reopen on March 1, 2020. The Center Director and her team were determined to work hard to meet this deadline.
We are proud to report that they were successful in their endeavors, and the Center welcomed 20 new students through its doors on March 1. The vitality and enthusiasm of the students and staff were palpable. Center Director Migueline Torres said, “I’ve waited a long time for this! We look forward to becoming one of the top-performing Job Corps Centers in the country and an asset to our community.”
